Certain spots on the ear correlate to specific areas of the body. Those points can then be used to heal their corresponding body parts.

Ear acupuncture is a practice dating back over 2,500 years that uses extremely thin, thread-like needles to stimulate specific acupuncture points.

Auriculotherapy supports, reduces and addresses the underlying causes by re-establishing the body’s equilibrium.
It also helps to promote tissue healing, builds up your immune system, releases endorphins which are the body’s own form of morphine; it is an excellent pain killer.

In an auricular treatment with acupuncture needles, smaller ones are used. Usually, half-inch needles are kept in for about 45 minutes.

Needles are placed on the ear to stimulate reflex points which release endorphins, which decrease pain and discomfort. It also stimulates the production of the hormone serotonin which lifts the mood and tackles issues such as anxiety, insomnia, and back pain among many others.

  • The auricular (ear) represents a micro map of the body

The ear is one of the most studied aspects of Chinese medicine. These studies have shown that the ear contains thousands of nerve endings most which terminate at acupuncture points. Each nerve ending connects to a nerve that goes into the brain and controls the corresponding part of the body. As an example, the point on your ear for the hip goes into the brain at the same location that controls your hip. So, by stimulating the hip point on your ear, we stimulate your brain’s hip nerve. This causes your brain to trigger a healing response to both the ear and the hip and pain is reduced.

Unique innervation of the ear allows an acupuncturist to access several Cranial Nerves:

  • Cranial Nerve V: Trigeminal – Provides sensory function for the face and the motor function of chewing
  • Cranial Nerve VII: Facial – Supplies motor, sensory and parasympathetic innervation to various structures of the head and neck
  • Cranial Nerve IX: Glossopharyngeal – Parasympathetic, motor and sensory innervation of the tongue, pharynx and larynx
  • Cranial Nerve X: Vagus – Supplies sensory, special sensory, motor and parasympathetic innervation to structures of the head, neck and thoracoabdominal cavity.
